Mitigate the impact of the criminal justice system on persons experiencing severe mental illness and/or intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families

Mission 

Decrease stigma, improve outcomes, increase trauma-responsive engagement throughout New Mexico

Goals

  • Divert individuals experiencing Severe Mental Illness (SMI) from the justice system and forensic evaluation process through connection to services through Forensic Navigator
  • Provide internal cross program guidance and subject matter expertise to other judicial programs intercepting behavioral health
  • Provide training and technical assistance to judicial districts and cross system partners across the state to include
  • Support effective utilization of resources that are available to communities and to mitigate the impact of severe mental illness on families and caregivers and communities
  • Implement diversion strategies that combine community-based treatment and Sequential Intercept Model informed interventions to achieve public safety goals

Behavioral Health Equity

  • According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), behavioral health equity is the right of all individuals. regardless of race, age, ethnicity, gender, disability, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, or geographical location to access high-quality and affordable healthcare services and support;
  • By reducing the ongoing disparities in mental health and substance use services in underserved and underrepresented population and communities, access to quality behavioral health care can ensure that the pilot project participants have the opportunity to realize their own wellbeing and health
